Aerial Twist

Aerial Twist

Prerequisites

Optional

Webster
The Aerial Twist can be approached in two ways:

Aerial + B-Twist will usually result in A-Twists that look like inverted Butterfly Twists. Your hips will still be higher than your head but won’t completely travel over your head.

Webster + B-Twist (Webster Twist) will more likely result in completely inverted A-Twists.

Everything said in this tutorial will apply to both versions. The most differentiating factor is the setup. Do want to enter it like a Webster or like a B-Twist? See what feels more comfortable for you.

01 Butterfly Twist

This is the most important prerequisite. Most twisting tricks are some form of butterfly twist. Drill it a lot. It will not just help you with the Aerial Twist.

02 Aerial

The Aerial Twist doesn’t feel like an Aerial at all, but learning the Aerial first will still be necessary, so you know how to invert. The Aerial teaches you how to change a Butterfly Kick to an Aerial - to change a B-Twist to an A-Twist. Swing the backleg up hard and try to make your aerial fast and powerful.

02.5 Webster

This step is optional, but a Webster will teach you how to carry your momentum forwards instead of to the side, like a B-Twist would. It also teaches you how to set for height in this trick. If you throw your upper body down low before you takeoff, your Webster is going to be low too. If you take off more upright, you’ll get an higher webster. The same applies to the Aerial Twist.
You can of course also learn how to do that by just drilling A-Twists by themselves. But if you can already do a Webster, it’ll help greatly.

03 Aerial Twist

If you have the prerequisites, than Aerial Twist shouldn’t be hard at all. All you need to do is setup like you would for Aerial / Webster and then perform a B-Twist instead. But only AFTER you leave the floor. If you start the B-Twist motion too early it will kill your flip.

Swing your arms opposite to each other. The first one will swing all the way from the top behind your body, while the other comes from the back all the way to the top.
Your Backleg needs to swing up high. It will determine how inverted your Aerial Twist is going to be.

Tips

Make sure you don't dip your upper body too low or else you’ll end up with an A-Twist with your face scraping the ground. Instead take off with your upper body at least horizontal to the floor.

Don’t turn your body sideways like you would for the Butterfly Twist. Resist the urge and keep your body in a straight line. Imagine trying to A-Twist on a balance beam.
