Swipeknife

Swipeknife

Prerequisites

Optional

The Swipeknife can be approached in three different ways:

Sideswipe + Hook
Inverted or at least horizontal Jackknife
Round Kick + Windex

How you are going to approach it, does not matter, but it’s easier the more prerequisites you have under your belt. I’ll recommend at least Sideswipe and Jackknife first.

01 Sideswipe

This is the most important prerequisites. You won’t hyperhook your Sideswipe if you can’t Sideswipe. It’s very important that you have this solid, before you add any variations. You need to be able to land the Sideswipe without much impact and with your foot coming down right underneath you. Try to land in the most controlled manner as possible. On one foot and without much need to rebalance after the landing. Go for height and minimize travel.

02 Jackknife

I learned the Jackknife before the Swipeknife, but Jackknife feels a lot harder for me personally. The horizontal position of the Swipeknife, gives me more room for my legs in the air. It’s totally doable to learn the Swipeknife first if you are more comfortable with Raiz and Sideswipe-like tricks, but it will help tremendously if you are already able to throw a decent Jackknife. You want your Jackknife to have a Roundkick that is kicked over fast. So kind of like a fast 540 Kick with an additional hook, rather than a Cheat 720 with a snapping Roundkick. Also you need to be able to throw the hook before or while you land - not after.

02.5 Windex

If you can do this trick already, then you are very close to the Swipeknife. Don’t worry if you don’t as it’s not necessary but you could learn it anyway, because it’s a useful progression and a cool trick by itself. It’s basically a Swipeknife minus the roundkick. Or a horizontal or inverted Cheat 720. All you have to do is pull the Roundkick leg through straight instead of bent and you’ll have a Swipeknife.

03 Swipeknife

Now put it together. While the Sideswipe can feel quite big and heavy, you will want to swipe very fast in the Swipeknife. You won’t feel the Sideswipe very long. Try to kick around as hard and fast as possible, so you’ll have more time for the hook kick. You don’t spot on the roundkick. While you swipe over, you’ll usually look at the ground ready to turn around to spot on the hook kick. That’s quite a difference compared to the Jackknife, in which you spot both kicks. Again go for height on the Swipe and minimize travel.
Tips

The Swipeknife is all about those prerequisites. Learn them and get them solid and this trick should be easy.

Try to land your sideswipe on one foot with your other knee up. This is a similar progression that is used to learn the Jackknife. All you have to do then is add the kick to turn it into a Swipeknife.  Make sure you land in a position, where you're spotting forward and not the ground.

Remember to turn around quickly. It will help a lot if you just think about spotting your target as soon as possible after the swipe.
