Backhandspring

Backhandspring

Prerequisites

Valdez

Optional

Performing tricker: bam.defocus
It's a backflip that lands on both hands first and then you spring back onto your legs.

01 Macaco

Learn the macaco first. It's a backhandspring from a squatting postion. It goes slightly over to the side. Still try to go over your head as much as possible.

02 Valdez

Next up: Turn your macaco into a valdez. It's a macaco where you only touch down with your first hand. This requires a bit more jump and momentum. As you swing your arm back, fixiate your spot onto your hand and keep looking at it throughout the whole trick.

03 Both hands

Now all you have to do is a valdez with both hands. At first your backhandspring could be slightly off to the side, because of the valdez. Try to get more straight as you practice.

Tips

This small progression chain can be very useful to get rid of backflipping fear. But note that you jump backwards in a backhandspring and in a backtuck you jump up.

Lean back before you initiate the jump. You don't want to jump too high or else a lot of momentum will be lost and you'll have trouble coming back onto your feet again.

Look back as soon as you can, so you can spot the floor as early as possible.

Some back and shoulder flexibility will definitely help, as you can reach back further before you have to jump off. The bridge position can also be a useful exercise.
